Contemporary derived from ballet.  That is why having some knowledge of ballet is vital for this class.

Contemporary dance focuses on movement exploration, like lyrical, it is also an emotional dance.  The founders of contemporary dance believed that dancers should have freedom of movement, using gravity and momentum, contrary to fighting against it, moving in ways that feel natural and good to our bodies, instead of constricting motions and posture. Contemporary also encompasses improvisational dance, which helps with all the fundamentals of this style.  Along with ballet, contemporary also encompasses elements of modern, jazz and lyrical.
This combination class of contemporary and lyrical is fun, creative, and can even be therapeutic.  We will be learning technical skills that are different from a classical ballet setting, but utilize the same basic skill set.
